Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise as an infant. She worked as a night nurse to allow her aunt the time she needed during the day for the love of art, literature, and theater. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective way to spread activism. DuVernay grew up with a mother who was socially conscious and taught her to utilize the arts as a means of expression. DuVernay was raised with her family in Compton, spent each summer at Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. The father of DuVernay's recollects seeing the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The time she spent in Selma Alabama inspired her later to write a script for a film based on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she earned diplomas in English and African American Studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism at the age of a student. Her first job was working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked look over the rubbish at the home that belonged to a member on the jury. In the course of her work, she became dissatisfied with journalistic work and entered the business of publicity. DuVernay found a job immediately out college, as a new publicist at a studio. She was promoted to the position and set up her own public relations company named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency created several lifestyle networks including Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
